Why do some people look younger? What is their secret? We all know someone who has defied all odds (and gravity) by looking younger than their age.
We all age, but how well we age comes down to genetics and our habits. Those habits and routines can make some people look younger than their age by as much as a decade or more.
Here are 8 simple ways to help you look younger than your age.
Be a Smart Sun Worshiper
The number one way to you can tell someone’s age is by their skin. People who look young have taken care of their skin.
I know we have all heard of how important sunblock is but still I have to include it at the top of this list. It is absolutely critical to wear it everyday and apply it multiple times. Why? Sun damage accounts for more than 90% of the aging (discoloration, lines, and wrinkles) of your skin.
So, if you aren’t protecting your skin from the sun, then you are literally wasting your money on all those fancy anti-aging skincare products.
Best sunblock tips
- Check the UV. The UV is on my Apple Watch home screen so I can easily check it.
- Use physical, not chemical, sunscreens like titanium oxide and zinc oxide.
- Wear sunblock, even indoors, if you are next to a window all day at work.
- Keep sunblock at the door, in the car, and in your bag.
- Invest in some awesome sun hats for added protection.
Lastly, it is never too late to start. Just think, if you wear sunblock every day this year, then that is 365 days you prevented damage to your skin. Your skin can then spend its energy repairing the old damage instead of trying to keep up with the continuous damage.
Consistently follow a hydrating skincare routine
Drinking water is great, but your skin needs more than that to stay hydrated. Nothing will make you look older and your lines and wrinkles worse than dehydrated skin.
You don’t need expensive products to have a good skincare routine. In fact, my favorite line is CeraVe. I use their facewash and daily lotions. They are inexpensive but absolutely all you need. The key is consistency of using them every morning and evening to keep your skin clean and well hydrated.
My favorite tip I learned was to keep body lotion in your shower to use at the end of your shower. Lotion isn’t just hydrating for your skin; it also traps water on the surface of your skin. After the shower is the perfect time to trap all of that moisture into your skin.
Other skincare routine tips
- See an esthetician to get help for your individual skin needs.
- Start using retinol nightly, getting a retinol peel was life saving for my skin.
- Stay away from alcohols in skincare products.
- Avoid foaming facewashes as they can be very drying.
Get a hairstyle that is current
In general, there are few rules of thumb that you should follow so your haircut doesn’t age you. First, get a haircut that is in style. Nothing will date you like an out-of-date hairstyle. Here are my best tips to having healthy hair that will make you look younger than you are.
Haircut and style tips to look younger
- Pick a length that is good for your hair. If the ends are split and straggly, then cut it.
- Brassy hair can make your hair look unhealthy and will therefore make you look older than you are.
- Get a haircut that you can style yourself easily. Or better yet, get a haircut that helps your hair style itself. A hot new trend is a Devacut for curly or wavy hair that enhances the natural curls.
- Hair with good volume will make you look younger.
- Get subtle sun kissed highlights one shade above your hair color. Get them especially around your face to give your hair dimension. Avoid one color all around. As you get older, your hair loses the natural highlights that you would see in someone younger.
What about bangs? Do bangs make you look younger?
Bangs can 100% make you look younger if you have a lot of forehead lines. However, they need to be done well or you are doing yourself a disservice.
Splurge on a Makeup Artist Appointment
YouTube has some great tutorials and tips to how makeup can make you look younger. They are truly amazing to watch especially if you want to be convinced of the power of makeup.
However, if you are serious about using makeup to its fullest potential, then you will want to find a good makeup artist in your area. They will be able to pick out not only the right colors for you, but also the right type of products.
When I saw a makeup artist, I learned that picking out the right foundation was so much more than just color and tone. Some are good for mature skin, while others are good for acne prone skin. I also got not only product recommendations, but also learned how to apply makeup myself.
Keep up with new style trends.
Have you ever seen someone from behind and been completely shocked when they turn around? I learned the power of style firsthand. I could have sworn the woman based on her style of dress was in her 20s or maybe 30s. When she turned around, I was shocked to see that she must have been at least 60. Now, if she had taken care of her skin by wearing sunblock, I think I would have assumed she was in her early 40s.
Now, I am not saying you need to go dress like a teenager and wear clothing that you are not comfortable in. Your goal is to find a good balance. A great way to get clothing that are both you and are in style is to work with a stylist. My favorite way to do this is through Nordstrom’s Trunk Club. It is Nordstrom’s version of Stitch Fix, but I like it better because you get to chat with a stylist, and you get to see your “trunk” before it is sent. Thus, allowing you to swap out items you don’t like until you like it all.
Give up nighttime snacking
Everyone knows how important beauty sleep is but there is a lot of new evidence on how to get the most bang for your buck every night. One of the best ways to make sure your sleep is restorative is to give up eating before bed. You don’t want to spend energy on digestion. It is called 16/8 intermittent fasting and is quite fascinating.
Paint your nails
As you age, your nails turn yellow and become more brittle. One way to keep your hands looking young is to paint your nails. Since I just don’t have the time to get to a nail salon, I paint mine with the Amelili Gel Polish. One of my greatest finds.
They work out just enough
You don’t need to spend hours at the gym to look young, but you do need to move your body. The healthy benefits you get from being active for 30 minutes a day will help you look and feel younger than you are. In fact, some studies show physical activity results in longer telomeres.
Why do some people look younger?
There are many different factors that change how young someone looks. The biggest indicator is usually skin. Therefore, the best way to look younger than you are is to wear sunblock every day and reapply it. Be sure you follow a good skincare routine and see an esthetician if you aren’t sure what is right for your skin. Lastly, pay for an appointment with a good makeup artist to learn how to apply makeup the right way.
Other reasons someone might look younger have to do with the way they dress and their hairstyle. By working with a fashion stylist and getting a more current haircut, you can drastically change how you old you appear. Subtle sun kissed highlights around your face will give you a youthful glow.
Lastly, try to improve your healthy habits such as getting a better nights rest and exercising daily.
