Gift exchanges are one of my favorite parts of holiday parties—it’s like a little game, a little surprise, and a whole lot of fun rolled into one. But let’s be real: random gifts can feel a bit hit-or-miss. That’s why I’m obsessed with themed exchanges. They’re easy to plan, and they make shopping so much more fun. Plus, they add that extra layer of excitement when you see a table full of adorable mugs, cozy socks, or other goodies everyone secretly hopes to snag.
Here’s a list of 25 amazing gift exchange themes you can try this year. Whether you’re hosting a Secret Santa, White Elephant, or just a casual swap with friends, these ideas will take your party to the next level.
Just make your you set a budget so you all are on the same page!
1. Cozy Socks Exchange
Start with a classic! Everyone loves a good pair of cozy socks—whether they’re fluffy, festive, or hilariously quirky. Encourage guests to pick out designs that fit the holiday vibe (think reindeer, snowflakes, or penguins). Everyone leaves with warm feet and a smile! To make it extra fun, wrap the socks in creative ways—like inside a Christmas stocking or paired with a small treat.

2. Mug Swap Madness
Nothing says “winter” like a cute mug filled with your favorite hot drink. This theme is all about finding mugs with personality—quirky sayings, festive designs, or even animal-shaped mugs. Bonus points if the mug is stuffed with extras like hot cocoa packets, tea bags, or marshmallows.

3. Ornament Exchange
Let everyone walk away with a keepsake for their tree! Guests can bring handmade ornaments, vintage finds, or holiday classics. You could even set a theme—like “funny ornaments” or “glam ornaments”—to make it more specific.

4. Something a Certain Color
Pick a color—red, green, gold, or even blue—and have everyone stick to it. It’s fun to see how creative people get while staying on theme. The table will look festive and coordinated, and the gifts will stand out in a beautiful way.

5. Starts with a Letter
For this one, assign each guest a letter (or let them pick the first letter of their name) and have them bring a gift that starts with that letter. For example, “B” could mean a blanket, a book, or a bag of chocolates. This one gets hilariously creative.
You can also have everyone do the same letter which can become a challenge of who can be most creative with it.

6. Thrifted or Re-gifted
Reduce waste and add a dose of humor with this eco-friendly theme. Guests can bring something they already own or thrift something fabulous (or hilariously quirky). It’s budget-friendly, sustainable, and always a source of laughs.

7. Homemade Gifts
There’s nothing more heartfelt than a homemade gift. Whether it’s cookies, candles, knitted scarves, or bath salts, this theme lets everyone show off their creative side. Plus, it makes for a super thoughtful swap.

8. Favorite Foods or Drinks
Who doesn’t love food? This theme is all about bringing your favorite treat, whether it’s a bag of gourmet coffee, a bottle of wine, or a fancy box of chocolates. You could even suggest local specialties or snacks from your hometown for a personal touch.

9. Activities or Experiences
Instead of physical gifts, guests can bring vouchers for experiences like movie tickets, museum passes, or cooking classes. It’s a perfect theme for making memories, and everyone will leave with something they can look forward to.

10. Locally Made or Sourced
Support small businesses with this thoughtful theme. Ask guests to bring locally made gifts, like artisanal soaps, honey, or hand-poured candles. It’s a meaningful way to give back while exchanging unique presents.

11. Franchise Favorites
Whether it’s Star Wars, Harry Potter, or Friends, this theme is a hit with fandom lovers. Guests can bring items inspired by their favorite franchises, from collectible mugs to themed socks or games.

12. Mini Plant Swap
Add a little greenery to your holiday! Guests can bring succulents, potted herbs, or even small houseplants in cute planters. It’s a gift that keeps growing and brightens up any space.

13. Candle Exchange
Who doesn’t love a candle? Guests can bring their favorite winter scents like cinnamon, pine, or vanilla. You could even set a theme, like “cozy candles” or “unique scents.”

For a more interactive gift exchange, have everyone bring board games or puzzles. It’s perfect for families or friends who love game nights. Think classic favorites or something fun and new!

16. Tech Gadgets
Keep it modern with a tech-focused exchange. Guests can bring affordable gadgets like Bluetooth key finders, portable chargers, or quirky phone stands.

17. Throw Blanket Exchange
What’s cozier than a soft, snuggly throw blanket? Guests can bring blankets in their favorite colors, holiday designs, or ultra-soft fabrics. Everyone leaves with a little extra warmth!

18. DIY Hot Chocolate Kits
For a sweet swap, ask guests to create a DIY hot chocolate kit with gourmet cocoa, marshmallows, and fun toppings. Add extras like peppermint sticks or chocolate shavings for an extra treat.

19. Book Exchange
Ask guests to bring a cozy or inspiring read they love. Wrap it up and write a little note on the outside sharing why it’s their pick. It’s thoughtful, personal, and perfect for winter nights by the fire.

20. Holiday Movie-Inspired Gifts
Pick a holiday classic like Elf or Home Alone and have guests bring gifts inspired by it. It could be anything from themed mugs to ornaments or cozy blankets for movie nights.
Have a showing of the movie as part of your party or for some real fun, have everyone come dresses as a character from it. I would totally love a Grinch themed costume party!

21. Favorite Fragrance
Have guests bring a candle, room spray, or essential oil in their favorite scent. It’s a perfect way to share personal taste while creating a cozy ambiance.
